MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE AT VALAGE SENIOR LIVING

At Valage Senior Living at Carson Valley, we believe that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one’s passions. Through our Livin’ the Dream signature program, we provide residents with meaningful opportunities to reconnect with lifelong dreams and embrace the experiences that have shaped their lives.

Whether it’s taking to the skies in a World War II aircraft or fishing in the mountains, these moments are more than just fulfilling dreams—they are about honoring legacies, rekindling joy and celebrating life’s most meaningful pursuits.

We are proud to share the stories of three remarkable future residents, whose lifelong dreams were recently brought to life through Livin’ the Dream.

AL SHEEHAN: A JOURNEY BACK TO THE SKIES

Alfred “Al” Sheehan’s fascination with flight began at just five years old after a biplane ride in Yreka, California. That early spark fueled a lifelong passion for aviation, eventually leading him to the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he served as a B-17 and B-24 pilot. While he wasn’t involved in direct combat, Al was responsible for relocating new aircraft, playing a vital role in the war effort.

His passion for flying didn’t stop after the war. Al’s long career with Pan American Airlines began in 1955, where he flew legendary planes like the Boeing 707 and Boeing 747. Throughout his career, he was part of transformative moments in history, including being part of the crew that first brought the Beatles to the U.S. on Pan Am Flight 101 in 1964. Another of his defining moments came in 1975, when Al volunteered for the last Pan Am flight out of Saigon during the Vietnam War, helping evacuate civilians under fire.  After his retirement, his passion for aviation never wavered.

Thanks to Livin’ the Dream, Valage had the honor of helping Al reconnect with his lifelong love of flying. During the Wings and Wheels event at Minden-Tahoe Airport, Al was invited to relive his pilot days and soar above the Sierra Nevada in a restored World War II aircraft. As the plane glided through the sky, Al experienced the familiar thrill and freedom he had cherished for decades.

For Al, this wasn’t just a flight—it was a moment of deep personal connection with a part of himself that had shaped his life. Livin’ the Dream helped Al embrace his passion once more, showing that even in life’s later chapters, dreams can still take flight.

RALPH & SUSAN SCHUMACHER: A LIFE OF LOVE, FAMILY & FISHING

Ralph and Susan Schumacher’s love story began over 63 years ago when they met on a double date at East Los Angeles College. Since then, their lives have been filled with love, family, and a shared passion for the outdoors. Together, they raised three children, welcomed four grandchildren, and spent more than six decades bonding over their love for fishing.

For years, Ralph and Susan made the Twin Lakes area in the Sawtooth Mountains their favorite getaway, where they camped, fished and hiked. They passed this love of the outdoors down to their children and grandchildren, making the joy of casting lines and sharing stories around the campfire a treasured family tradition.

After more than a year away from their outdoor adventures, the Livin’ the Dream program gave Ralph and Susan the opportunity to return to their beloved pastime. On a sunny August day, they fished at Bridgeport Reservoir, surrounded by the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountains. Guided by Grey Light Guide Service, the couple spent a peaceful day reeling in trout, enjoying the serene water, and reflecting on a lifetime of shared memories.

The night before their fishing trip, they enjoyed a lovely dinner together in Bridgeport, reminiscing about their years of adventures. Their trip also included exploring the charming town of Bridgeport and a stay at the historic Silver Maple Inn. But the highlight of their Livin’ the Dream experience was undoubtedly their time on the water—a moment of pure connection, both to each other and to the passion they’ve shared for more than six decades.
